RAD Revolution

Wondering what RAD is all about? Hold onto your keyboards, we're on a mission! Recycle A Device (RAD) is the cool squad making laptops do a second dance of awesomeness!

Email us at team@recycleadevice.nz, and let's bop together!

  • Donation Dance: Organisations and peeps like you donate old laptops, saving them from the electronic graveyard. It's like laptop rescue, but way more fun!

Kanikani with Rangatahi: We teach young ones the techy tricks to refurbish these laptops. Plus, we spice it up with RAD Clubs where they become tech wizards and community superheroes!

Refurbish & Share: After the makeover, these laptops don their superhero capes and fly to new homes. Schools and community groups, we team up with you to spread the tech love far and wide!

  • Have you heard this eye-watering fact? A staggering 20% of kiwis find themselves on the other side of the digital divide. Imagine a gap between those confident in their devices, internet access and digital know-how, and those still on the journey to the tech world. That’s about one million people navigating the challenging road toward access, digital skills and understanding.

  • Curious about how RAD went from a student daydream to nationwide change? Swing by our story hub for the epic saga!

✨Spoiler alert: it involves tech-savvy students, a sprinkle of magic, and a whole lot of laptop love.

  • RAD isn’t just here for the show; we’re on a digital divide mission! RAD is:

Getting fit-for-purpose laptops to those who need them ✅

    Developing student STEM superheroes ✅

And doing an environment dance diverting e-waste from landfills! ✅

Plus - did you know all this aligns with 7 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals?

  • We stand on the shoulders of passionate giants—Digital Future Aotearoa, Spark Foundation, Remojo Tech, and The Southern Initiative. Together, we've begun weaving a story of impact, and are now supported by various organisations and entities sharing our vision.

Unveiling our Process - How does it all work? ⚙️

  • Laptops that are less than ten years old and come with their trusty charger.

  • Donating is a breeze - fill out our form, drop us an email, or give us a call 020 4019 6510. We'll guide you through the process, ensuring your device makes a positive impact.

  • Devices given to RAD are donated to people within the community who need them. We aren’t a repair business so we can’t repair a device and return it to its owner (sorry!) There are plenty of other repair businesses in Aotearoa that can help you with that!

  • Find out all about donating a device here, including how to let us know you’ve got something to donate.

  • Laptops which are less than ten years old and come with a charger.

Tablets - we started a tablet pilot in late 2021, which is currently on hold. We will update this page and our social media if we start accepting tablets into the programme again.

  • Absolutely! Our partner Entelar, performs a secure BlackBelt wipe, and you can even wipe it yourself if that's your preference.

  • Find out all about our device donation needs here, and some suggestions for what you could do with your device that might not meet our criteria. Schools are able to keep up to half of the devices they refurbish to distribute in their own community, and we distribute the rest to community groups who are able to identify and support people in need.

  • Donate your used laptops.

Follow us on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn and share our posts with your friends, family and colleagues.

RAD is a not-for-profit organisation that relies on donations and other fundraising efforts to continue our mahi. Consider making a donation towards our operating costs.

Peek Behind the Curtain: Cost & Model 💰

  • We're a not-for-profit initiative, fueled by donations, grants, and support from charitable organisations. We don’t sell anything and we don’t charge our donors or our recipients. Every cent counts, so feel free to donate.

  • In our digital age laptops are oh-so helpful but let’s be real - these gems can break the bank! Luckily, in Aotearoa, there’s a whole host of used laptops waiting for a little makeover. With a sprinkle of repairs, they’re ready for a stellar second life, avoiding the gloomy fate of waste streams or far-off profit lands.

Now with new Chromebooks for Years 7-10 learners starting at $375, Windows laptops (best choice for Year 11 and up) starting at $700, and refurbished laptops available through public retailers (like PBTech) starting at around $300 many ākonga are priced out of the conversation.

Here’s the cool bit - RAD's magic turns used laptops into gems, costing $186 to the programme. It's a win-win—affordable laptops with a side of sustainability and positive social vibes. Who said tech can’t be both savvy and cool?
