Donor story: Kiwibank
At a glance
Kiwibank's purpose is built around three big goals that drive everything they do to ensure they're making a real difference as a business - Tamariki are better off, Kiwi are better off and Aotearoa is better off. Being a purpose-led business, Kiwibank knows that they need to operate in a way that helps their customers, people, their communities, and the environment. This includes ensuring that they minimise the amount of resources going to landfill. By working with RAD, Kiwibank is ensuring that when their laptop assets that have come to the end of their life within their business, they are given another life out in the community. Both RAD and Kiwibank share the same values of repurposing and upskilling rangatahi or tamariki to be better off, and their partnership has created benefits for many Kiwi.

Why did Kiwibank want to work with RAD?
With all waste streams that they manage, Kiwibank aims to extend the life of the asset, be that through donation, upcycling or reuse. When the business initiated a laptop refresh programme for almost all laptops in the business, they were looking for the right partner who they could trust had the same commitment to reuse and repurposing that they did. RAD’s transparency, data security procedures, working in upskilling rangatahi, waste reduction and straightforward donation process made RAD the best partner for their needs.
How do Kiwibank and RAD work together?
Kiwibank first completes their own data wiping
Kiwibank then advise RAD of the number, type and any anomalities (i.e. damaged devices) that they have available to ensure RAD has capacity to accept the devices
Devices are couriered to RAD’s IT asset management company
Devices are received and a gifting certificate is issued to confirm that RAD is now the owner of the devices
RAD's data security partner performs an additional data cleanse
Devices are then distributed to schools and community groups around the motu
This collaboration happens between Sustainability and Technology internally at Kiwibank, their external IT Asset Manager, RAD and RAD’s asset management partner.
Learnings along the way
Overall, the process has been really simple, however, before Kiwibank confirmed their partnership with RAD, they did an internal audit of their own data cleansing processes to ensure the devices would be donated without any proprietary information, and to review the gifting certificate and tax implications of the donations. This has helped strengthen internal processes and has allowed us to also donate other IT assets, such as old mobile phones to other community groups.
There were some issues with the receipt of devices, and RAD promptly identified process improvements to address these. This has resulted in more thorough and complete understanding of RAD’s procedures both internally and for future donors.
